CheapGarmin Approach G5 GPS-Enabled Golf HandheldGood device…if it worked.I bought the G5 about a month ago as a substitute for my Bushnell range finder. For the first 3 rounds it worked like a charm. I really liked the shot measuring feature as well as the overall ease of use for the device. Problem 1) On the 4th round the power button stopped working (after I had locked the screen). After removing the batteries and re-inserting them the power button resumed working. Problem 2) During the 5th round the GPS intermittently lost signal. By the 6th round it never got signal at all (on a perfectly clear day too). Problem 3) After contacting Garmin support I was told I had to ship the unit to them (with insurance on the item) and that in 7-10 days they would then send a replacement back. What…no cross shipping for a unit that’s defective after a MONTH of use? Plus, I have to foot the bill? Unacceptable. I’m genuinely considering just tossing my replacement unit on EBay and upgrading my Bushnell at this point. It’s a shame too because I did like the functionality.

Garmin Approach works but way too bulkyI received the Garmin Approach about 2 weeks ago & have now had the opportunity to use it a few times. It basically seems to work well. However, I was quite suprised by how bulky & heavy it is when compared to other such devices. I feel like I’m carrying a laptop (exaggeration) around in my pocket. It’s not so much the height & width as it is the depth weight. The depth could have easily been significantly reduced if Garmin had designed it with a thin cell chargeable battery instead of these bulky AA’s. My other complaint is removing / replacing the batteries to recharge is much more cumbersome than simply plugging in a charge chord. My guess is their next iteration of this device will eliminate this rediculous AA Battery design. My second issue is that I’ve consistently found it quite difficult to accurately place the circle marker on the touch screen. It always seem to settle at a location other than where my finger attempted to place it. And, when I’m golfing, I need a quick no nonsense tool. On the golf course, I already have way too much to think about – yet alone adding a finicky device that seems to have a mind of it’s own. I’ll need a little more time with this device. But, at this point, I’m not convinced I’d buy one of these if I had it to do all over again. Stepping off the yardage from the closest marker & fudging for pin placement seems to be close enough for non government work in my book.
